Bless your heart. I guess you figured it out by now. You did the same thing that I did - bought a laptop with no DVD drive. I bought one for my daughter. It arrived yesterday. We got it registered and updated and a bunch of other things. Then she opened up her new Intuos drawing pad with the installation CD and that is when the trouble started.

If you have multiple optical drives, you can select which drive you want to be able to open using Door Control. Right-click on the Door Control eject icon in the system tray, select the “Drive” option at the top of the popup menu, and then select the drive you want to open using Door Control from the submenu.

We fiddled with it for about 10 minutes and I Googled the problem and there were so many people asking the same question. Yours was first. I kept looking and found a few snarky comments about getting what you pay for. But the answer is - There is no DVD drive on our machines.I purchased mine from Amazon and am returning it today and purchasing a different laptop that has a DVD drive and better it also has Windows 7. I didn't read the comments and reviews on Amazon and didn't notice that DVD drive wasn't listed in the specs.I originally chose this particular laptop because it got good reviews from Consumer Reports back in December.

However, they did not give the specific model number of the one they tested - just Dell Inspiron 15R. It was the only laptop that didn't have the complete model number.

Only I didn't know that. When I typed this in Amazon, I clicked the first one that came up and that is how it all started.I hope your luck changed and you now have the laptop you want.

About the worst thing it can be is if themotor or gear train failed, which would mean replacing the drive. If thedisc in the drive plays OK, you know that the power and the connector arefine. If not, you should try reseating the drive in the bay. It's also possiblefor the drive to be locked in software by the operating system, or for apower management scheme to have cut power to the drive.

Check these by rightclicking the drive icon and checking properties, or looking at you powermanagement settings. But, when all else fails and you can't get the discout of the drive, there's always, THE MIGHTY PAPERCLIP.CD and DVD drives for computers have been designed with an emergency releasemechanism since time immemorial. Unlike your DVD player for your TV or yourstereo CD player, the disc in your computer drive may be much more valuablethan the drive itself. Yes, if you own the software legally, you should beable to get a replacement from the software company for a moderate charge, but maybe you need it now.

In any case, the emergency release for the DVDtray doesn't require any special tools or skills, just a paperclip. Startby unbending a leg of the largest diameter paperclip that will fit in thehole on the faceplate of the drive. Next, insert it it straight into thehole, and if you're lucky, there will bee a little click before it goes invery far, and the tray will pop out a fraction of an inch.In the picture to the right, I haven't used any force at all, beyond gentlypushing in the paperclip, and the CD tray popped out that far by itself. From here, it's an easy task to pull it out all the way so the disc can beremoved. Below, I'm opening the DVD drive out of a Sony Vaio, but the traydidn't spring out when the paperclip pushed in the release, which you cantell by feel.

So I had to pull on it with my fingernail behind the plasticfacade while depressing the release. It opened pretty stiffly for the firstfraction of an inch, and then pulled right out the rest of the way. Thatpretty much covers what you'll encounter with manually opening an opticaldrive, either it will pop open as soon as the paperclip works the latch,or you'll have to help it along. But there are instances in which the emergency release won't get the trayto eject. The worst of these is if a disc shattered at high speed and jammedall the mechanics up with little shards of plastic. You'll know this is thecase by the noise if you gently tilt the drive back and forth. Anotherpossibility is that an adhesive label peeled off in the drive and has gummedup the works.

In either case, the odds of the drive being salvageable aren'tvery good, but if it was a label failure, you should be able to rescue thedisc by disassembling the drive around it until the tray ejects or the discis accessible. And before you rush out and buy a supposed generic replacementfor the drive, remember that while the connector may be standard, the driveshell is customized, and you may not be able to transfer all of the shellhardware from one drive to another for mounting.
