Oil gets better. There was not much choice years ago, and sure you can run engine oil too.

BUT, these are gears shearing the oil, and gears don't need detergents, added polymers designed for hot running engines, etc. Old gear oils with massive amounts of sulphur ran hundred thousand miles in cars with no problem. Its been replaced with the engineering of synthetics. 10wt (thats the base stock of all 10-30's-40's) is just that.
